Ray Minniecon is a descendant of the Kabi Kabi nation and the Gurang Gurang nation of South-
East Queensland. Ray is also a descendant of the South Sea Islander people with connections to
the people of Ambrym Island.
Currently, Ray is the Director of Bunji Consultancies. Bunji Consultancies is a production company that supports the development of Aboriginal film and documentaries and leadership and business initiatives with various public and corporate clients. He is also the Community Chaplain in the Redfern Community, Sydney. This year he is making a documentary for national Indigenous Television called, “Searching For God in Australia". Ray is a consultant on the development of programs and projects for the remaining men of Kinchela Boys Home (KBH) with the University of New South Wales. Kinchela Boys Home was the place that many of the Aboriginal male children were taken to under the Native Welfare Act of NSW. Ray is also a Board member of Red Dust Role Models, which take elite athletes, and professional role models to remote communities to inspire young Aboriginal children to make healthy life choices and become educated. Ray has worked with the Anglican Diocese of Sydney as Pastor and Director of Crossroads Aboriginal Ministries. He is the inaugural Chairperson of the Sydney Anglican Indigenous Peoples Committee and a Council member of St Andrews Cathedral School. For the past several years, Ray has facilitated the development of four congregations within the Diocese of Sydney, support the development of a private Aboriginal Christian school called Gawura, and gave oversight to the first Aboriginal graduate from Moore Theological College. He also coordinated the first Coloured Digger Project in Redfern. The Coloured Digger Project seeks to give recognition, honour and respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander contributions to the defence of Australia. Ray is a “Vision Keeper” of the World Christian Gathering of Indigenous Peoples.” He is also a council member of the Global Indigenous Dialogue. He is a member of the Panel of reference and ardent supporter of Micah Challenge Australia with its mandate to “Make Poverty History” campaign. He is a pastor with the Aboriginal Evangelical Fellowship. Ray has a BA in Theology from Murdoch University in Western Australia. He also has a number of certificates in Management and Leadership. Ray has helped to establish Aboriginal churches and develop the Aboriginal leadership for churches in Sydney and Perth. He studied and worked at Murdoch University, WA as Coordinator of the Aboriginal Education Unit. At Murdoch, Ray helped establish the Aboriginal Education Unit where he assisted in the founding of a graduate degree program in Aboriginal Studies, assisted in developing the Aboriginal Employment Strategy for Murdoch University and assisted in developing the first Veterinary Studies for Aboriginal people. Ray has worked for World Vision Australia’s Indigenous programs for twelve years and was its national Director for six of those years. He established health prevention programs, leadership development programs and micro-enterprise initiatives through Aboriginal art programs. He was Editor-in-Chief of the National Indigenous Leadership Journal and is a strong advocate for issues relating to poverty and injustice, especially for Indigenous people. He has spoken about Indigenous issues at local, national and international forums. In 1995 he made an intervention at the UN in Geneva, on behalf of Indigenous Peoples at the first hearing of the Draft Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. In 2001 he spoke in Italy at a Global Forum on Ethics and Economics, where he also had a private audience with Pope and received a blessing from the Pope. In Italy, he spoke about Globalisation and its Impact on Local Cultures, specifically indigenous cultures. Ray is the father of three children and two grand children. Ray loves writing, singing and song writing. He also loves music, sport, public speaking and travel. |
