ANZAC DAY IN NEW YORK
Friday, 25 April 2008
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander delegates to the UN’s international indigenous summit have marked Anzac Day in New York.

Around 40 Indigenous Australians are attending the seventh session of the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues.

Taking a break from official proceedings, members of Australia’s Indigenous delegation have joined compatriots in the ‘Big Apple’ for a commemorative dawn service to mark Anzac Day.

The event organized by the Australian consulate general was held at the Rockefeller Center in New York City.

This year’s Anzac Day commemorations mark 93 years since Australian and New Zealand troops landed on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey.

Carbon Media in conjunction with National Indigenous Television (NITV) has a dedicated production crew in New York to cover the UN indigenous forum.

Vodcasts direct from New York are updated daily on the internet each day during the forum, featuring reports by award-winning Australian journalist Ginny Stein.

The reports are available on the website of issues-based travel show Black Tracks: www.nitv.org.au/blacktracks

Australia has its largest delegation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people at this year’s UN forum.

Carbon Media’s coverage of the delegates’ experiences in New York marks a first in Indigenous media.

Managing Director Wayne Denning says their commemoration of Anzac Day is significant.

“There’s a long tradition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people serving in Australia’s defence forces. In times of war, many sacrificed their lives for their country.

“The role of Indigenous people in the defence of Australia is often neglected, and it’s very appropriate to show delegates to the global Indigenous forum at the United Nations honoring all those who gave their lives on this Anzac Day.”
