The Fred Hollows Foundation is a proud partner of The Indigenous Literacy Project

Working closely with the Australian Booksellers Association and the Australian Publishers Association, The Fred Hollows Foundation purchases and supplies books and other culturally appropriate learning materials to remote communities where The Foundation works.  Communities select and order reading material from catalogues and sample book packs provided by The Australian Booksellers Association. The Fred Hollows Foundation staff also identify other literacy needs.  The books are then supplied to schools, libraries, early learning centres such as crèches, Women's Centres and other identified institutions, to enhance their pool of literacy resources.

Indigenous Team 2008

The Barefoot Rugby League Show is a 90min panel based show with a LIVE audience which features:

  • Weekly NRL match highlights
  • Profiles of Indigenous players involved in the NRL
  • Coverage of regional and junior competitions in NSW, QLD and the Northern Territory
  • Yarns from local communities and junior rugby league teams and players from the above noted regions
  • Guests, both on the panel and via live broadband crosses, to keep Indigenous people informed and entertained about the game of Rugby League

"The show is an exciting innovation and one that will give Indigenous people a voice in one of their most passionate activities, Rugby League". Paula Maling - Executive Producer

The Barefoot Rugby League Show is a weekly 90 minute national television program, broadcast live to air about all things Rugby League, with an emphasis on Indigenous players, teams and championships. Hosted by Brad Cooke and former NRL player Tony Currie, each week invites 2 guest panelists being ex or current indigenous NRL players, coaches or officials, to be on the panel of experts discussing the week in rugby league. The show also highlights “grassroots” football, particularly in communities where Junior Rugby League and independent competitions and remote championships are held. Spiced with the sense of humour of Sideline host Wes Patten, and complete with a segment being a rare chance for young players picked out of the audience to get coached live by Wes and a visiting NRL star, the program is an all ages television event.

Normally, the program attracts a 100+ strong audience of all ages, shapes and sizes made up by the local junior rugby league teams, family, friends, supporters and fans. Instead of the die hard football fan traveling all the way to a studio to be part of the Barefoot Rugby League Show, the program warrants great television by taking the program to the people, especially to areas with strong indigenous communities, by visiting various areas in the Sydney and outskirt areas. Barefoot will be LIVE at the Central Coast Leagues Club where a strong indigenous community exists, and we see this as being an ideal place to be for next 6 weeks ahead!
